Drawing with van Gogh

I love taking my kids to the art museum. I don’t do it enough. My oldest loves to draw and has asked many times lately to go to the museum and draw. So finally we did.

Both kids wanted to sketch and thanks to my sister who came along to supervise, we could let them.  We let them wander through the galleries to find something they liked and wanted to sketch.  I was so excited when Connor stopped in front of this van Gogh.  It’s one of my favorites here at MIA.

Here’s his sketch of the Olive Trees by Vincent van Gogh.

He also chose to sketch sculpture as well.

Gwyneth, of course, wanted to draw too.

She wasn’t as interested as drawing the artwork around her as Connor was….. Instead she chose to focus her artwork on drawing a treasure map and some things that were a little more familiar to her.  (And no, these were not hanging in the museum – just from her memory).

We did take some time to just enjoy the art.

I think one of the best ways to learn is by doing.  So seeing different styles of paintings and sculpture and trying to re-create that is a great learning tool.  As he gets older, he’ll see more and more in each painting and his drawings will become more detailed.  I’ll have to bring him back to these pieces next year to have him draw them again and compare with these sketches.

Have a great day!

My youngest (hes 5) loves to draw too…I planned on taking him to see the Egypt stuff (he’s obsessed right now)…but now I think wee’ll have to bring his sketchbook down too 🙂

  3. I think your son has a gift for art.

I think that is fun having the kids draw from such talented artists. Comparing the drawing later on is a neat idea too.
